Neurological

What is neurological physiotherapy? Rehabilitation through physiotherapy has been proven to aid sufferers of neurological disease, including those who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), or who have suffered a stroke or other brain injury.

Neurological diseases affect the brain, however their output is almost always displayed in other areas of the body. This can leave clients feeling helpless, as they often become frustrated with their loss of control over their own body.

At Discovery Physio, we aim to provide you with an understanding of your condition in order to equip you with the tools you need to take back some control and manage it yourself long- term.

What can I expect?
Your neurological physiotherapy treatment will begin with a thorough assessment of your condition and symptoms. We advise for you to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing to your appointment, as your physiotherapist will ask you to complete a range of exercises so that they can determine the full extent to which your condition is affecting your body. They may also need to visually examine some of the affected areas, so clothing which allows access is preferred.

Your initial assessment may take up to one hour and will involve some questions about your diagnosis, symptoms and medical history, so please bring with you a list of any medication you are currently taking. We will also talk through your end goals.

What happens after my assessment?
Following your assessment, we will review the findings and discuss them with you, before drafting an action plan and talking you through possible treatments that we believe will be beneficial to you.

What do neurological physiotherapy treatments involve?
All treatment programmes are tailored to the needs of each individual client. However, dependent on your own needs and goals, your treatment plan may include:

  • Advice and education on self-management
  • Active physiotherapy treatment, i.e. soft tissue stretches, joint mobilisation and facilitation
  • Balance work
  • Exercise therapy
  • Sensory retraining
  • Pain management
  • Practising activities of daily living
  • Teaching your carers some techniques to help with moving or positioning

You progress and goals will be reviewed with you at set intervals throughout your treatment
programme.
